Soundshock are lucky enough to be joining Blind Guardian at KC Vltavská for their first ever gig in the Czech Republic's capital city as part of two special Christmas shows, and since FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague were involved in 2010's 'At the Edge of Time', it would be a shame for them to miss out. Greeting these German power metal legends is an 800 strong army of well educated, logo wearing, fans including a fair few of their countrymen who have made the relatively short trip across the border.
This is a back to basics gig by Blind Guardian's standards. There isn't the room for the big video screens we saw at last year's London show and this is a tiny venue compared to where they'd play in Germany, but that just makes it all the more special. 'Sacred Worlds' get events underway in fine fashion and the band are clearly loving the reaction. Frontman Hansi Kürsch is in party mode with a lot more interaction with the audience than previously experienced. 'Nightfall', 'Tanelorn (Into the Void)' and 'Valhalla' are the stand-out tracks as always.
The career spanning set comes to an end so quickly as Hansi announces 'And the Story Ends' as the final track. But they quickly return for another couple of songs. When trying to conclude the gig once again, a shouting contest is started by the crowd as half want 'The Bard's Song', the other lot want 'Majesty'. The latter easily loses, but is played anyway. Still, the band have other plans. Blind Guardian bring a fantastic show to a close with a second encore of four fan favourites that the audience have been crying out for all night. A glorious 'Wheel of Time', both parts of 'The Bard's Song' ('In The Forest' and 'The Hobbit'), and an emphatic sing-along of 'Mirror Mirror' ends a truly memorable show in style.
