Stealthily building up an army of grass-rooted fans, Aussie’s Karnivool have managed to sell out tonight’s show at the London Scala. Considering the amount of snow that should have stopped most from turning up at this evenings gig, it’s warming to see so many eager, happy faces together, stuffed like sardines.

As Jurojin leave the stage after a decent warm-up and a painstaking sound-check, Karnivool at last meander into view, meeting an eruption of cheers as they open with the delicate clinks of ‘Simple Boy’. As they descend into sublime riffs and chomping bass, Ian Kenny, with his Maynard James stroke Thunderbird presence, hypnotises as his liquid, faultless vocals drive the others impeccable musicianship.

The gig is completely focused around their 2009 release ‘Sound Awake’, with just a few songs from ‘Themata’ woven in for good measure. It’s a clean set and they’re as tight as ever, every note is harnessed and Kenny’s voice remains impeccable. Few would complain after this evenings set - but there is a niggling feeling that something was missing. It was all a little bloated - one can only hope that ‘Sound Awake’ wasn’t the beginning and the end of something special.
