Hard Rock Hell II – The Dragons Ball

Day 2

  @

Pontins, Wales

Hi Di hi!! It’s an earlier start on the next day and a hungover holiday camp are up surprisingly early for the start of 15 hours of rock. For a midday start, Spit Like This have drawn a fairly decent crowd… many already starting their day of drinking once again.

A band who have built up a strong cult following and have been awarded the title of the UK’s trashiest band continue the glam rock witnessed in the early hours and put in a performance that many will remember as one of the best of the weekend. Tygers Of Pan Tang give us all a nostalgic treat to gorge on whilst Waysted and Praying Mantis continue the rock with the stage living up to its “Born Again” tag.

It’s not until the re-branding of the stage (now known as the Porshamar stage) do things really get lively. Finnish folk metallers, Battlelore bring their Tolkien inspired fantasy antics to North Wales after touring with the preceding band. After awesome sets on the Finnish Fire tour around the UK they will have no doubt picked up a fair few fans… they won’t have done themselves any harm here too after this showcase in theatrics. Despite an eleventh hour cancellation of Korpiklaani’s set due to an accordion gone walkies, it’s up to Alestorm to continue the festivities, perhaps a little earlier then they should have been to everyone’s delight. Whether you think of them as a comedic band or a group jumping on the “battle metal” bandwagon, no one can argue that they never fail to entertain. YARRR!

Meanwhile, the main stage has opened its doors once again, the Satanic sluts are doing the rounds, and the beer is still flowing freely. When Hawkwind arrive onstage the place finally their set plods along but never gets too exciting, but I’m sure their old fans would have loved this space-prog odyssey. After a short set in a chalet, Orange Goblin hit the main stage and finally gives the main arena some life. The stoned rockers crack up the noise and energy to much applause. When Clutch arrive on stage it’s easy to see what the buzz is about. Their showcase of fuzzed grooves is headliner worthy. Easily migrating from heavy metal to punk to an almost blues sound, these guys have a lot to offer.

So it’s down to Black Label Society to justify their headliner slot. After a stupidly long intro the curtain drops and the man is given the welcome he deserves. With the sound quality as good as it has been all weekend, it’s a pretty easy task in the end for Zakk Wylde and his merry men to satisfy this weekend’s expectations. Proving they still rock with the best of them ‘Fire it Up’ is a definite set highlight and ‘Stillborn’ is an awesome pick to close the set!
