| Hard Rock Hell II The Dragons Ball - Day 1 @ Pontins, Wales |
Way after the Summer festival season has long ended and as Winter is in full swing, it is time for a few thousand metalheads to descend on a quiet town in North Wales for the perfect event to round up the year. Although the venue doors opened mid afternoon, it is not until the early evening when things really get underway. The main stage, the ‘Classic Rock Stage’ welcomes Glyder to kick start the night and this Irish band make the perfect start to the weekend. After they explore the kiddies adventure playground in the press area, Benedictum are next up. Gone, are the stage effects, but the stage presence of Veronica Freeman on lead vocals is enough to keep everyone’s attention. Meanwhile, after opening act Black Hole generate some interest with their emo/hardcore by numbers, Textures are ready to really get things going. They put on a performance that will eventually go down as one of the best of the day. These Dutch tech-metal stalwarts have a bright future indeed and on this performance, it’s not that distant. When Cancer Bats hit the stage at 1:00am… the divide between them and the band before them is huge. Just like on record, the balls to the wall blast of punk rock is as exciting as it gets. On the main stage however, Thin Lizzy, perform all the classics that you’d expect, but without late frontman Phil Lynott, this still sounds like a tribute act after all of these years since the reunion. Crowds start to thin out around the main stage with two bands to go. Doro is the perfect answer to anyone who needs a reason to stay awake they remain relevant as she was back in the early nineties and as essential as any of today’s pin up metal starlets. The final act of the very early morning is Tigertailz. The recently reformed Cardiff glam rockers take to the stage with the assistance of the Satanic Sluts. It’s not very fair to say that they are good for comedy value… but as the copious amount of Monster energy Drink has pretty much warped everything, nothing really makes sense anymore Reviewed by Daniel Gray
