| Negura Bunget, Fen, Scythian @ The Purple Turtle |
Tonight was to be a concert of pure organic mysticism with Negura Bunget returning to the UK after a highly successful support slot to Ephel Duath last year. The intimate venue was densely populated for tonight’s show. Opening were Scythian, a London-based black/thrash metal group. The music was akin to the sound of the first-wave black metal bands, embellished with the bludgeoning nature of traditional death metal. With austerity engrained in their stage presence, they were a formidable opening act and were digested well by the crowd. Fen’s music was ponderous black metal, somewhat in the suicidal vein with post-rock escapades although their essence focused on nature rather than depression. This English band made appropriate use of growled and clean vocals coupled with melodic and abrasive guitar. The reaction was strong and this upcoming UK band was a compliment support to Negura Bunget. In spite of a few trifling sound complications towards the commencement of their set, the Negura Bunget struck the audience with a deluge of themes influenced from their native country. With the presence of some rather unconventional folk instruments, the unique Romanian folk/black metallers executed some prime selections from their discography. Naturally, the setlist leaned towards the latter end of their career, substantiated with multiple offerings from the latest album Om, including ‘?esarul de Lumini’, ‘Cunoa?terea T?cut?’ and ‘Înarborat’. The atmosphere they created was hypnotically beautiful and the passion they imbue their music with shone through. Their stage presence was a humble one but the audience’s response was overwhelming. Again, Negura Bunget had conquered London with their mature compositions and will probably be headlining a larger venue rightfully next time they play this city.
