Paul Gilbert could easily be confined to the bargain barrel of shredheads were it not for his warm nature and love of the Ramones. This clearly feeds into his music and his gig at the Mean Fiddler was no exception to this. Complete with band interplay to prove that Gilbert’s ego isn’t anywhere near as bloated as his ridiculous chops and a fun, uplifting deliverance of the music, perhaps shred isn’t totally dead.

Gilbert played with a smile on his face and allowed room for his band to shine, giving a tight n’ raw performance over his instrumental prowess. Then he stepped up to the mike, but not to arrogantly yell ‘Are you ready to rock?!’, but to actually sing a song! Yes, Paul Gilbert also writes normal songs with vocal lines and when he begins his punky voice leaps over the music like an enthusiastic child. To top it off he plays his guitar with a drill with a gleeful smile smeared clearly across his face and even allows the great drummer to do a drum solo (which is a byword for ‘lets go to the bar’). Fun songs, insane shredding and a genial atmosphere made for a great night. Long live Paul Gilbert!
