One-man extreme metal projects are few and far between, and good ones even harder to come by, but Damnation Army is a great listen. The baby of Thomas Nyholm, who handles all instruments and vocals, this album brings together melodic death and black metal with a mid-paced tempo, with the aim to rock you rather than decimate you.

The real glue which holds this album together are the extremely competent guitar leads, which twist and weave their melodic goodness throughout each song, alongside some precise drum beats. All too often Damnation Army have been incorrectly labelled as black thrash; the heavier sections with slab-heavy drums and downtuned guitars do resemble the likes of early In Flames, which did borrow from black and thrash camps, but it is fundamentally melodic black and death metal. Indeed, we even hear the same sort of warm folk-influenced acoustic passages, such as in the short instrumental ‘Upon The Bleeding Horns’. This is perfect for those yearning for the old-school brand of melodic death metal, and guitar melodies don’t get much more jaw-droppingly sublime than this. Pure Swedish brilliance.
