No, that's not the sound of Metallica's tour bus striking a sacrificial dwarf and rolling into a primary school. But the effect transmitted by one of Crowpath's fleeting exercises in the oppressive is much the same. The Swedes are right up in your face, pummelling you with the entire drum kit for half an hour while chaotically directionless riffs are suspended between vibrato-tinged death metal flourishes and tremolo picking. Vocalist Henrik Ivarsson admonishes the listener with nondescript shouting and screams, so what he's actually saying is a mystery. This may be a blessing with titles like ‘Where Dolls Do Sin’ and ‘Cleansed in Chlorine’ gracing the tracklist.
Mercifully brief, ‘One With Filth’ is in keeping with Crowpath's familiar first language; short sharp showers of a shitstorm. While being extreme almost to the point of parody the music is ungratifyingly repetitive and bereft of contrast. The musicianship is undeniable and as a heavy, many-edged tool the album will surely have its uses to some but overall the envelope is left unpushed.
