LACUNA COIL - DARK ADRENALINE (7)
Lacuna Coil had fans worrying when, in 2009, they released the drearily commercial rock release ‘Shallow Life’. Were Lacuna Coil forsaking their darker roots in favour of mainstream success? It certainly looked that way.
So it comes as a massive relief that ‘Dark Adrenaline’ is a strong full-length, with many head-bang worthy riffs and thumping grooves. However, this release is tinged with sadness at the knowledge that the band that brought us ‘Comalies’ and ‘In A Reverie' remains long forgotten since the American rock-inspired advent of ‘Karmacode’ back in 2006. Whilst still having an overwhelmingly commercial feel, ‘Dark Adrenaline’ contains within it some pit-worthy epics such as ‘Against You’ and ‘Upside Down’. This album also contains some of Lacuna Coil’s catchiest songs, including the electronica-inspired ‘Intoxicated’.
Saying that, much of the album feels like filler for the more radio-friendly likes of ‘Trip The Darkness’ and its ill-conceived cover of REM’s ‘Losing My Religion’. Still, this is a vast improvement on ‘Shallow Life’ and only time will tell whether Lacuna Coil will one day regain their past glory.
