FORTERESSE – CRÉPUSCULE D’OCTOBRE (9)
Forteresse are everything you’d expect from brilliant French Canadian black metal - austere and coarse. This is the band’s fourth full-length album and the second they have released since recruiting Fiel as their drummer.
Sweetly melodic tremolo picking, bursts of ripping speed interspersed with funeral paced marches and stone scraped vocals have all gone into making this yet another triumph for Quebec’s black metal scene. Fans of Csejthe, Monarque, Sui Caedere and Gris should definitely give this a listen. The fact the lyrics are left in the band’s native tongue makes it all the more beautiful. The heavy handed drumming fits perfectly; Fiel has a crude and violent style that is speedy enough to match with the rest when things are heavier and thunderous enough to have a spine tingling effect during slower sections of the album.
‘La Lame Du Passé’ and ‘Enfants Du Lys’ really shine and are without a doubt the best tracks. The unusual choice of album artwork makes this all the more inviting; even if it is a touch deceptive. Something darker would perhaps have fitted better.
