Saturnian Mist

SATURNIAN MIST – GNOSTIKOI HA SHAITAN (4)

Finnish black metallers Saturnian Mist have been frolicking in the underground scene since 2006.  This year sees them finally embrace the magic of a full length studio-recorded album in the form of ‘Gnostikoi Ha Shaitan’.

Instrumentally, they embody everything that is wonderful about Eastern European black metal.  Unfortunately, this is ruined by Zetekh’s vocals; lacking the range and pitch needed to perfect the sound, they have a rage-filled quality that's better suited to hardcore and nu metal.  It could be said that Saturnian Mist are trying to push the envelope and be progressive in the style of music they produce; if this is the case then it doesn’t quite work. The female vocals on ‘Aura Mystica’ are tacky and unnecessary.

The breadth of scope used in riffs across the album is impressive.  However, the song structure is predictable and this can rapidly become boring.  The production may need attention, but this is a solid effort – sadly let down by vocals that don’t fit with the intended genre of music.
