It's not like Proclamation will be signing to Nuclear Blast or GoatPenis will turn up in HMV any time soon, but with the recent baffling 'mainstream' furor over Teitanblood and the likes of Profound Lore picking up Vasaeleth, it's not a bad time to be a black/death goat worshipper. No longer constrained to single digit hand-numbered tapes available only to those with a valid Nuclear War Now! forum login the underground-underground is now somewhat available for general consumption. Enter, Prosanctus Inferi.
While the 'Sacreligous Desecration In Excelsis' demo was fairly standard fare, 'Pandemonic...' is a slight step up, albeit still unlikely garner the same attention of any of the aforementioned bands. Song titles that sound like Stephen Fry vomiting a thesaurus do little to convince of any further depth to album, because as genres go the black/death palette is fairly monochrome. However, 'Pandemonic...' carries a mild vibe of a Portal obsessed Pete Helmkamp ('Fumugating Portentious Sacriligium' in particular being a good example), eschewing the 'loose change in a washing machine' stylings of Black Witchery and the 'oh-my-god-my-ears-ooh-a-riff-happened' approach of Revenge, PI instead hover around mid-paced dissonance for the most part, switching between goatblast monotony and off-kilter cyclonic riffing just often enough to hold your attention. Thankfully the production strikes a good balance between maintaining an oppressive, cavernous atmosphere whilst also allowing you to actually hear what's happening on the fretboard.
It'll be interesting to see where they go from here given the unfortunate suicide of the drummer, but overall this release screams "not essential." Merely adequate.
