The black metal elitist out there is sure to be going wild over the thought of a re-release from Primordial and ‘Spirit The Earth Aflame’ is a perfect choice. The Irish legends have so many characteristics that push them out of the genre boundaries and despite being released a decade ago, this album is still as heart wrenching as the last. For Primordial, it’s all about the oxymoron of sounds they create, as the riffs collaborate into both epic triumph and pure sorrow flowing through a grey atmosphere.
The almost tribal drumming and Naihmass Nemtheanga’s vocals full of passion and pain rise up through the record from the start with the haunting title track and continues to flow through to ‘Gods To The Godless’, a track likely to have got as much praise back then as it does now.
A problem as always with re-releases is whether or not the fan is getting anything more out of the album that before. Admittedly with a band like Primordial a re-release could be more accessible than previously but here the second disc contains a Bathory cover, some live tracks and B sides from EP ‘The Burning Season’, so there is enough for you to sink your gnashers into. IF you have never heard this album, it’s a must for any folk metal fan, however if you own the original, this is probably only for the CD shelf perfectionists.
