Postmortem Promises release their first full length album ‘On Broken Foundations’, three years after their self titled E.P. It’s instantly noticeable how much the vocals have altered in the time that has elapsed between releases. Gone are the high pitched screams evocative of a pig squeal, replaced solely with a slightly repetitive, guttural roar.

For the most part, this is an album that establishes a format early on, however instead of lumbering along predictably, some interesting tempo changes and the odd interjection of a breakdown are enough to sustain interest.

Fifth track ‘Self Righteous’, which under a different guise also appeared on their last E.P., features a rather ill-placed classical style guitar solo which, although impressive, seems heavily disjointed from the rest of the album.

Too catchy to be death metal and too sludgy to be deathcore, On ‘Broken Foundations’ is an album that although heavily reliant on formula somehow manages to avoid being dull.
